School Games cancelled over coronavirus concerns

Yorkshire Sport Foundation, who oversee the School Games project in Yorkshire, have announced the cancellation of all School Games county final events in West and South Yorkshire due to the ongoing concerns around COVID-19.  

All events from this week up until the Easter half-term holiday have been cancelled, with the government looking to ban mass gatherings from next week. 

Active Fusion, who deliver the School Games in Doncaster, have informed schools of the current situation surrounding the coronavirus outbreak, with the sporting charity following advice from Public Health England. 

A spokesperson from Yorkshire Sports Foundation commented: “We have taken the difficult decision to cancel all School Games county final events in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire that were due to take place between now and the Easter half-term holiday.” 

“The events rely on a significant number of people to ensure they are viable, including volunteers, sport organisers, venues and, of course, the schools themselves. In the last few days, a number of these groups have told us that they have decided not to be part of the event, and we fully respect their decision.

“Consequently, and to provide clarity for others due to take part in the coming weeks, we have come to this decision.” 

The events currently affected in South Yorkshire are:
