C’s Story: Excelling in a supportive, inclusive environment while discovering new sports.

C, a 16-year-old, is a familiar face at Active Fusion’s SEND Camps. Having attended several camps before, including the most recent Christmas 2023 camp, C returned for the Summer 2024 session at Doncaster College with high expectations. As an active teenager, C’s passion for staying physically engaged drives his participation in these camps, and this Summer was no different.

Life Without Fusion Camp

For C, Summers could easily turn into long, uneventful days without the structure and excitement that Active Fusion camps provide. He shared, “If I did not have these camps to attend during the Summer, I would be very bored. I like to stay as active as I can, and these camps allow me to do that.” The absence of the camp would mean missing out on physical activities and social interactions, both of which are vital for C’s well-being.

Favourite Aspects of Fusion Camp

One of the things C loved the most about Fusion Camp was the variety of activities and sports on offer. “Being able to try different games and activities is what I enjoy the most. They select a wide range of sports, some of which I had never tried before,” C explained. The mix of traditional sports like football, dodgeball, and hockey, alongside more adventurous games like laser tag and nerf gun battles, kept him engaged and challenged. What C valued even more was the opportunity to learn new things. “It’s not just about having fun,” he added. “These activities helped me develop new skills and challenge myself, which is something I look forward to every time.”

Skills Gained for the Future

While fun and games were at the heart of the camp, C highlighted the personal growth he experienced as a result. “The skills I’ve developed here, especially teamwork and confidence, have made a huge difference. I used to struggle working in groups, especially with people I didn’t know, because I’m quite shy,” he said. C attributes much of his growth to the support of the Active Fusion coaches. They helped him overcome his hesitation and built his confidence to engage with others. “They brought me out of my shell. Now, I don’t fear asking for help or talking to new people.” These improvements in communication and collaboration will undoubtedly benefit C as he navigates school, social situations, and beyond.

The Fusion Camp Feeling

When asked about how the camp made him feel, C was quick to express the positive impact it had on his emotions. “Amazing, happy, fulfilled,” he described. “These camps give me a sense of belonging, where I can socialise with others who have similar abilities, all while staying physically and mentally active.” The camp was more than just an opportunity to play sports – it was a place where C felt included and supported. This sense of belonging played a huge role in boosting his happiness and confidence.

C had nothing but praise for the coaches at the camp, including Tom, Josh, Aleksy, and the rest of the team. “The coaches were always there to help and made the camp a great experience. I felt free to express myself and have fun with my friends” he stated. Coach Tom, who has worked with C at previous camps, noted a significant transformation in him over the past few camps.

“C has always been lively and eager to try new things. What stands out now is that he believes in himself more. He’s more comfortable mixing with others and doesn’t give up when things get tough,” Tom observed.

Looking to the Future

When asked if he would return to future Fusion Camps, C’s answer was a resounding “Yes.” He explained, “This is my third time at the SEND camp, and I will always come back when I can. I always leave feeling happy, having had a great time trying new activities and meeting new people.” The positive experiences C has had at Fusion Camp have made him eager to continue attending and growing. As C summed up his experience, he stated with a big smile, “This camp has been amazing – one I will definitely remember. I can’t wait for the next one!”

For C, Active Fusion’s SEND Camp has provided much more than just an outlet for physical activity. It has been a source of joy, personal growth and a space where he has gained confidence and valuable life skills. The camp has allowed C to break out of his shell and build connections with others, all while staying active and engaged during the Summer months. The memories and experiences gained at these camps will undoubtedly shape Cs future, both in sports and in life.
