Robyn’s Story: Returning to Her Roots to Inspire the Next Generation
Robyn Chambers, a Level 4 apprentice at Active Fusion, has had an incredible journey of personal and professional growth while working at Crookesbroom Primary Academy. Her story is a testament to how Active Fusion’s apprenticeship programme empowers young people to develop essential skills, confidence, and career readiness through real-world experience and meaningful support.
A Full Circle Moment
Robyn first heard about Active Fusion through her Level 3 Sports and Physical Activity course at Doncaster College. Intrigued by their mission and apprenticeship opportunities, she took the initiative to research the organisation and was impressed by their programmes. After applying online, Active Fusion matched Robyn with Crookesbroom Primary Academy, a perfect fit, as it was her former school. “I was excited to return to the school that shaped my early years and give back as part of the Active Fusion team,” Robyn shares.
From Phonics to PE: A Day in Robyn’s Shoes
Robyn’s typical day as an apprentice is varied and rewarding. She starts her mornings as a teaching assistant for Year 2, helping with subjects like maths and phonics. In the afternoons, her focus shifts to her passion, sports. Robyn observes and learns from Active Fusion coaches as they deliver PE sessions, gaining valuable insights into effective teaching methods and approaches. She even leads her own PE classes, refining her skills and confidence as a coach. Her day often ends with an after-school sports club, where she inspires children to stay active and healthy.
Support That Made a Difference
Robyn credits much of her success to the supportive colleagues at Crookesbroom Primary Academy. Whenever she faces challenges with classroom management or individual students, there is always someone ready to offer advice and share strategies. “Having a network of experienced staff who are willing to help has been a game-changer,” Robyn explains. “It’s given me the tools to handle difficult situations and improve my teaching.”
New Tools for a Bright Future
Since starting the programme, Robyn has developed a wide range of skills essential for a career in sports coaching. From understanding the importance of physical activity to mastering behaviour management techniques, she has grown tremendously. “Behaviour management was something I struggled with at the start,” Robyn admits. “But by observing other teachers and talking to them, I’ve learned how to effectively handle different classes and situations.” In addition to these foundational skills, Robyn has participated in CPD courses, conferences, and events that have deepened her knowledge and broadened her experience as a coach.
How Active Fusion Prepared Robyn for the Future
Thanks to the skills and experience gained during her apprenticeship, Robyn feels well-prepared for a future in sports coaching. She envisions herself as a full-time sports coach at Crookesbroom Primary Academy and credits Active Fusion for helping her achieve her goals.
Robyn’s Vision for the Future
Robyn believes programmes like Active Fusion’s are essential for young people, as they not only provide practical experience but also make a positive impact on the next generation. For those considering an Active Fusion apprenticeship, Robyn encourages them to take full advantage of every opportunity provided, such as CPD courses, conferences, and coaching events, as these experiences help apprentices grow and improve. Summing up her journey in one sentence, Robyn says, “Active Fusion is an amazing charity, which offers so much to young children and gives people opportunities they’ve never had before.” With the skills and confidence she has gained, Robyn envisions herself as a full-time sports coach at Crookesbroom Primary Academy, fully prepared for the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
